Jean and Marie Major: A Story of Resilience and Support

Jean and Marie Major, hardworking grandparents from Belle Glade, unexpectedly became full-time parents to their grandchildren.

Stories to Inspire

Their already fragile financial situation was further strained when their 3-year-old granddaughter, Moreitza, began showing troubling symptoms. Initially dismissing it as a minor digestive issue, the Majors grew increasingly concerned as Moreitza continued to vomit and struggled to digest food.

Their case manager, who had been providing consistent support to the family, recognized the seriousness of the situation and encouraged the Majors to seek medical attention. She referred them to a medical office, where they discovered that Moreitza was suffering from an undiagnosed condition requiring specialized care. This diagnosis was critical not only for the child’s well-being but also for the entire family’s stability. Marie took on an even greater role when she adopted her four grandchildren after her daughter, unable to manage Moreitza’s condition, left them in her care. Despite the overwhelming responsibility, the Majors persevered with courage and love.

The Farmworker Coordinating Council stepped in to provide ongoing support—assisting with transportation to medical appointments, ensuring that Moreitza could continue receiving specialized care through the Health District. The district also provides Ensure, the only nutrition Moreitza’s stomach can tolerate, which has been essential for her growth and health. In 2024, the Majors’ story was recognized by Season to Share through the Palm Beach Post. Thanks to this recognition and the generosity of the community, we were able to raise $55,000 to help the family purchase a mobile home, offering them long-awaited stability and security.

Today, while the Majors continue to face challenges, their journey shines as a powerful example of resilience, love, and community strength. Their story reminds us that when we come together, we can create extraordinary transformations—turning hardship into hope and giving families like theirs the foundation for a brighter
